Chapter Eight

“Your application says you’re a witch.” Mike eyed the petite redhead from across the table and sipped his coffee. She wore a dark green tunic over light green leggings, and her eyes sparkled like emeralds.

“Oh, I am,” she replied in a thick Irish accent, the wart above her lip bouncing with her words. “My great-great-grandmother was one hundred percent witch.”

Mike rubbed his temple to ward off the impending headache and glanced over the application again. He’d conducted seven interviews in the past two weeks here, in the private dining area at the back of his restaurant, and so far, not a single applicant had been an actual witch.

They’d all been devious, vile, even downright evil, but not one of them met Satan’s number one requirement. His personal assistant had always been a witch, and the chances of getting the ancient bastard to change his ways were slimmer than Frosty the Snowman surviving in hell.

But Mike wouldn’t give up. In between interviews and running his restaurant, he’d also spent the last two weeks getting to know Crimson. Falling in love with her. He’d spent every spare second he had with her, watching her practice her magic, her confidence growing with every spell she cast correctly. And the nights spent between the sheets… She could give a succubus a run for her money.

He’d grown used to having her in his life, and he intended to spend forever with her, whether it was here in New Orleans, with Crimson as the high priestess of the coven, or somewhere else if she didn’t win the challenge. It didn’t matter where he lived, as long as it was topside with his magnificent witch in his arms every night.

He looked at the leprechaun in front of him, his gaze bouncing between her wart and her monobrow, and she glared back. She was ornery enough to spend eternity by Satan’s side, that was for sure. “Tell me about your magic.”

She disappeared from the chair and reappeared in the corner behind him. “Teleportation.” She disappeared again, and the sound of thick heels on the wood floor echoed through the room before she swatted him on the back of the head. “Invisibility.” Her form came back into view as she smiled smugly and plopped into the chair. “And demons don’t intimidate me. You’re not nearly as scary as everyone said you’d be.”

“I’m not like other demons.”

“I should hope not. I’m looking for murder, mischief, and mayhem. So, do I get the job?” She crossed her arms and arched a bushy brow.

He suppressed a smile. How he’d love to force this little elf on the Prince of the Underworld. If only Satan would accept her. “Can you cast spells?”

“Who needs spells when you can be invisible?” She disappeared and reappeared in a flash. “I also have a knack for finding gold.”

“The Devil has no use for gold.”

“But I bet you do…” She grinned, revealing rotting teeth nearly the same color as her shirt. What was it with leprechauns and green?

He sighed.
